I’ve had this gifset open all night. I couldn’t think of what to say about it exactly. Except I knew I had to say something.
Because the fourth gif.
Steve’s expression in the fourth gif. His jaw tightens. He lifts his neck straighter and looks Tony in the eye. He swallows, and in the very last frame we see his eyelids drop just a little bit. He’s angry, furious even.
Because how many times in his life has he heard that? That he was “not of use”?
The army told it to him how many times before he finally got in for the experiment?
He was told it even after, that they needed to test him, to keep him out of the way. He was used as a propaganda tool, put in that “spangly outfit” not of his choice in the beginning, but to be kept out of the way of the “real soldiers”?
God only knows how much he heard it before then.
And now he’s hearing it again. Now that he’s an established, proven soldier, leader, hero. He’s still being told he isn’t good enough. That he’s not of use.
